If you are a learning professional, you’re likely excited about the many new tools that are available to you, but perhaps also a bit overwhelmed.
With the many LXP options available in the market, this is a matter of working smarter and not harder, and that starts with finding an LXP that provides you with the most innovative exercises for your employees to constantly feel challenged, engaged, and have fun while they learn. With that in mind, we want to introduce you to CanopyLAB’s newest feature, brainstorming.
What is brainstorming?
According to TechTarget, “brainstorming is a group problem-solving method that involves the spontaneous contribution of creative ideas and solutions. This technique requires intensive, freewheeling discussion in which every member of the group is encouraged to think aloud and suggest as many ideas as possible based on their diverse knowledge.”
Some of the benefits of brainstorming include the following:
- Providing multiple creative ideas and solutions to a problem.
- Fostering an innovative and diverse environment where all ideas are welcomed.
- Breaking the routine by encouraging groups to get out of their heads and think outside the box.
- Encouraging teamwork.
Brainstorming exercises are trendy within design thinking and part of the ideation process. The brainstorming process can be done individually, but research shows that brainstorming with others and thus building on others’ ideas generates more ideas for the individual. Although brainstorming is a creative process that encourages free thinking, the process often has a very clear structure:
- It has a time limit.
- It begins with a clearly defined problem or question.
- It aims to find as many answers or options as possible.
- It encourages creative ideas.
How do I use it?
The Brainstorming exercise can be used throughout the learning flow and works in units where learners need to activate their creative thinking and knowledge within a specific topic.
Tips
- Be specific about what you want your learners to generate ideas on or activate knowledge about.
- Ask an open question that sparks ideas!
- Don’t ask factual questions – and no right or wrong questions.
- Give your learners at least 30 seconds and a maximum of 5 minutes to work using the timer you will find when setting the exercise.
The numbers don’t lie. This new generation wants to feel appreciated at work and have opportunities to grow and learn while achieving corporate goals. However, this is not easy when HR and L&D departments continue to rely on ancient strategies that don’t work in a tech-heavy society whose attention spans don’t go beyond the 20-second Instagram reel or TikTok post.
